Sports, The American Past Time

SPORTS

A sport is any activity which requires physical ability, physical fitness, skill, technique and strategy. Generally a sport involves competition among two or more people.

History of Sports

Historical findings suggest that the Chinese were engaged in sporting activities as early as 4000 BC. In ancient Egypt, sports like swimming and fishing, were well developed and regulated several thousands of years ago.

In ancient Greece, Sporting activities were a part of their culture and the Greeks created Olympic Games which were conducted once every 4 years. This tradition still continues in the world today.

Industrialization, advent of mass media and globalization has been consistently enhancing the field of sports. Professionalism entered into the sporting arena and made sports even more popular.

In recent time sports is an accommodating mental and psychological aspect of competing as well. Cyber sports organizations are becoming more and more famous.

Sportsmanship

Sports must be enjoyed for its own sake. But the pressures of competition or an obsession with personal achievement often work against fairplay. Despite this, sportsmanship is an appreciable attitude exhibited by the participants before, during and after the sporting competition. Fair play, courtesy towards teammates and opponents, ethical behavior, integrity and grace in losing, also constitute sportsmanship. Good sportsmanship is necessary irrespective of winning or losing.

Sportsmanship is not about winning or losing it is about taking part in the competition and the way you play the game.

Regulation and Professionalism

Sports is not only competition. They are also entertainment. Advancement of mass media has made sports more popular and the players are elevated to celebrity status. This has led to the formal regulations of sports and professionalism has crept in the sports arena.

Sports have changed from time to make it more profitable. Because of this sports is no longer just an recreational matter. It has become a professional issue just like any other business.

Technology

As new technologies emerge they are applied to the sports field also. This has led to dramatic changes in sports equipment. From health to training, sports players have improved applications of new technologies. Technology is helping the sports players to recover quickly from injuries and play to an older age.

Technological advancements like motion capture and computer simulations have helped sports players attain great skill and ability.

Politics and Sports

Sports and politics have mutual influence on one another. When ‘Apartheheid’ was in Africa, the sports community stayed away from playing there. In Ireland sports of British origin are being discriminated even now.

People compete in national teams. This has enhanced both nationalism and patriotism. Every country has a national sport which strengthens national unity.
